Born in Craiova on February 8, 1995, Mitrita began his professional career in 2011 with Touro Severin in the second division. After just one season, he got the opportunity to join Vitorul Constanta.
In the 2012-13 season he spent six months on loan at Steaua Bucharest in the Under-21 side, playing mainly in the UEFA Youth League matches. He returned to Constanta, where he stayed until the summer of 2015, making a total of 51 appearances while scoring seven goals and producing nine assists.
Pescara offered him with a new challenge and he packed his suitcases for the first time to move to Italy.
During his stay there he helped his team win promotion to Serie A. His final record with Pescara was 37 appearances, two goals and six assists.
In July 2017 he returned to his homeland with Universitatea Craiova, moving initially on loan before making a permanent transfer.
In two-and-a-half seasons, Mitrita played 60 times, scoring 29 goals, and contributing 11 assists, going on to be considered one of the top Romanian players. He also won the Romanian Cup in the 2017-18 season, scoring a goal in that successful cup triumph.
His appearances had the scouts of several clubs around the world interested in his services, but the most serious interest came from New York FC in February 2019.
The American MLS team decided to sign him as one of their allotted foreign players, paying almost eight million euros to bring him to the other side of the Atlantic.
Mitrica adapted immediately and began to show his worth on the pitch straight away. He made 49 appearances, scoring 18 goals, and also served up seven assists. In October 2020 in the midst of a pandemic, he was loaned to Al Ahly to be closer to his family.
He stayed in Saudi Arabia for one season, playing 30 times, while he scored four goals and created another five.
Mitrita is also an international with Romania, with whom he has played 13 times and has scored two goals. Before becoming a full international with the senior side, he also represented his country at youth level.
