Pelkas wins Regency Best Goal of the season again
Dimitris Pelkas landed the Regency Casino Best Goal of the Season for a second consecutive year, thanks to his breathtaking strike against Panathinaikos in PAOK’s home encounter for Super League Souroti.
In a sport of substance, spectacular plays stand out. Dimitris Pelkas has been blessed with such talent, that he can combine both in the most natural way. He scores often and does so in impressive fashion. He proved it yet again during 2017-18 season, adding more outstanding goals in his rich portfolio. Like the one against Panionios or his second strike against Panathinaikos, slaloming past their defence.
He earned his season award with another goal though. It came against Panathinaikos, who are steadily becoming his favourite rivals. The timing seemed perfect. It was the first game of the season with the fans back in the stands after the harsh ban imposed on the club. Toumba was packed and the team were just embarking on their impressive second half of the season.
PAOK were a joy to watch, led by Dimitris Pelkas . After just 8 minutes of play, he collected the ball 15 metres out of the box, lifted his head and fired an exquisite chip to beat Dioudis, who could only watch stunned the trajectory of the ball.
It was one of the season’s top moments, a highlight that will accompany Pelkas forever, just like last season’s Regency Casino Best Goal of the Season, also against Panathinaikos, but with a direct free-kick.
On his way to the repeat, Pelkas had to face stern opposition by Adelino Vieirinha and his direct free-kick in the Greek Cup final against AEK Athens. It was a close call, but the Greek international midfielder prevailed by a few votes.
Fernando Varela came in third. For a goal that stood at first, the referee pointing to the centre line. Then the refereeing trio hesitated. It took them 5-7 minutes to decide that the goal should be disallowed. Then they went to the dressing room. The goal would stand again. In the end, PAOK lost the match 3-0 on paper…
