Cimirot wins Regency Casino Best Goal of the Season award

He scored just once in his maiden season at PAOK, but it was enough to earn him the Regency Casino Best Goal of the 2015-16 season. The thunderous shot of Gojko Cimirot against Panathinaikos was voted the season’s best.

31.05.2016

Last summer, at the age of 23, he decided to leave his country for the first time and accept PAOK’s offer. The season started on the wrong foot, as he sustained an injury in his debut, in the home encounter against SKODA Xanthi. He remained out of action for a long time, but didn’t give up. He worked hard and returned stronger than ever.

Igor Tudor trusted in him after his recuperation and he gradually became an indispensable cog of PAOK’s machine. Scoring isn’t his strongest suit, nor does it belong to his duties on the pitch.

That however doesn’t stop him from testing his long range shot. It’s exactly what he did in Leoforos against Panathinaikos, scoring his maiden –and only- goal with the black-and-white shirt. But it wasn’t just any goal! Gojko Cimirotwasn’t in an advantageous position when he collected the ball, but he had already decided what to do. His unstoppable volley landed at the back of the net and his belter was acknowledged by football fans all around Greece.

The Bosnian’s goal got 47,6% of the vote by PAOK fans and earned top spot in the poll held by paokfc.gr.

Giannis Mystakidis’s winner against AEK Athens in the play-offs matchday 1 was second in the poll, with 20,26%. Giorgos Tzavellas beautifully teed up the youngster, who completed PAOK’s comeback with an impeccable lobbed header, thus sealing our first three-pointer in the play-off procedure.

Dimitris Pelkas’s unbelievable individual effort and lob against Brøndby IF was third in the poll. In one of his first displays for PAOK after returning from loan, the young midfielder was set up by Róbert Mak and, without dwelling on it, he lobbed the ball stunning everyone –including the rival goalkeeper. It was a goal of exquisite technical skill, but unfortunately it was scored very early in the season and was somehow forgotten.
