May 19 is a day of mourning as we remember the Pontian Greek Genocide. PAOK FC, a club identifying with the lost fatherland and founded by refugees, honour the memory of those who perished during the ethnic “cleansing” of 1915-1922.
Nine decades ago, around 353.000 Greeks of Pontos lost their lives and even more were forced to leave their homes, their lands, their country.
The Genocide and the Extermination of the Greek population from a region where they thrived for more than 2.800 years was completed in 1924, after the so-called exchange of population (recurring massacres and deportations) saw that there were no remaining Greeks in Pontos.
