Ahead of PAOK’s 2024-25 Betsson Greek Cup final showdown with AEK, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the game, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Yellow and Blacks in the competition.
- This is the 18th time that PAOK and AEK are facing each other in the Greek Cup before the final. Their history of meetings begins in 1931, when they met in a single knockout match in the semi-finals of the competition, and stretches up to 2021-22, when it was the last time they met in the quarter-finals of the competition.
- On the previous 17 ocassions, PAOK have qualified 11 times and AEK six. Four of the six qualifications achieved by the Yellow and Blacks were up to 1964-65, and from then on the “score” is 11-2 in favour of PAOK.
- PAOK have qualified in 11 of the last 13 ties they have faced AEK before the final. In total, in rounds before the final, they have played 26 matches in both venues, with PAOK having prevailed in 13, while there are six draws and seven wins for AEK.
- In the 2021-22 season, they faced each other again in the quarter-finals, with a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Toumba Stadium and PAOK winning 2-1 in the second leg at OAKA (Kurtić 95′, Mitrica 97′ – Simoes 83′).
- In the 2020-21 season, they met in the semi-finals of the competition, with PAOK qualifying after registering two wins.
- The last time they met in the competition was on May 24, 2023 in the final, when AEK prevailed 2-0. In the three previous finals, PAOK won all three trophies, in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
- The last time they faced each other before this series of finals was in 2011-12 in a single game in the Round of 16 phase, with PAOK qualifying at the Toumba with a 2-0 (33’ Lino, 54’ Athanasiadis) win.
- AEK’s last qualification over PAOK was in the 2001-02 season at the quarter-final stage, where they prevailed 2-1 in the match in Athens (36’ Tsiartas, 61’ Maladenis – 49’ Frousos). In the second leg at the Toumba, the home side sufferd one of their heaviest defeats against AEK with the final 4-0 (28′ Tsiartas, 39′ Lakis, 47′ Nikolaidis, 89′ Ivic) scoreline coming after PAOK had a numerical disadvantage following the sending off of Koulakiotis in the 27th minute.
