Internationals round-up
Deciding matches in the UEFA Nations League and in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers were on the menu this November with some of PAOK’s internationals returning smiling and others not…
Greece were defeated 3-0 by England at home, but the Greeks did their duty by winning 2-0 away against Finland in Helsinki, so they have the opportunity through the play-offs to qualify for the second group for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Giannis Konstantelias came off the bench in the match against England in the 70th minute, while he remained on the bench in the match against Finland.
Two draws for Andrija Zivkovic’s Serbia, and they are now a possible opponent for Greece in the play-offs in League A. Zile was a starter and went off after 78 minutes in the Switzerland-Serbia (1-1) game and a starter against Denmark (0-0), coming off after 82 minutes.
There was a debut for Dominik Kotarski for Croatia in the away match against Scotland. The PAOK goalkeeper «held out» until the 86th minute, when the home team scored and went on to win 1-0 (final score). In the next match against Portugal (1-1) Kotarski remained on the bench. Both Portugal and Croatia qualified for the quarter-finals of the Nations League.
Kiril Despodov was a starter and captain in Bulgaria’s 1-0 away win over Luxembourg, while in the Bulgaria-Belarus match the PAOK winger served a suspension. As second in its group, Bulgaria progress to the promotion play-offs for League B of the Nations League.
Omar Colley’s Gambia missed the African Cup of Nations qualification train after a home defeat (2-1) by Comoros (the Double-headed Eagle defender played the full 90 minutes), despite winning 1-0 against Tunisia in Tunis, with Colley also starting and playing the full 90 minutes.
On the other hand, Ali Samatta and Tanzania qualified for the AFCON finals. A 2-0 away win against Ethiopia ( Samatta played for 85 minutes), was followed by a 1-0 win against Guinea led by Mady Kamara in the group derby, where he also played as a starter, coming off in the 76th minute.
Kamara and Guinea only needed a point in the match against Tanzania to qualif, but they were defeated and were eliminated. The PAOK midfielder was a starter, coming off after 68 minutes in this derby clash, while in the previous game – a 1-0 win over Congo – he again started and was substituted in the 76th minute.
As for Fedor Chalov, he played for 60 minutes in the… friendly 11-0 win over Brunei.
A satisfactory performance from the new Greek Under-21 side was the outcome in the friendly with Hungary (1-1), which took place in Serres. Smyrlis and Sinanai started, while in the second half Monastirlis, Rumiantsev, Filon (Tasiouras was replaced due to a minor injury) and Deligiannis also played.
Unfortunately, the Under-19 Greece side failed to qualify for the Elite Round of EURO 2025, despite an impressive start with a 5-2 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina (a goal and two assists from Polykratis, penalty from Mythos, goal from Hatsidis and assists from Koupenos and Kalaitsidis). In this game, Koupenos, Kosidis, Polykratis, Bataoulas, Mythos were key players, and Kalaitsidis came on in the 67th minute. What came as a huge shock, and did not reflect the play in the match, was the 3-0 defeat to Montenegro, with Bataoulas, Kosidis, Koupenos and Mythos being starters and Polykratis, Kalaitsidis, and Hatsidis coming on as substitutes. In the third match of the Group 8 qualifying group, which took place in Heraklion, Crete, against Italy, Greece were defeated 1-0 thanks to a penalty in the 87th minute. Starters this time were Beleris, Koupenos (came off in the 78th minute), Bataoulas, Kalaitsidis (came off in the 46th minute), Polykratis, Chatsidis, and Mythos (came off in the 56th minute).
On the other hand, the Under-17s – playing in qualifying Group 6 of EURO 2025, which took place in Romania – qualified for the next phase already from the second game. They beat Romania 3-0 (two goals by Krommidas, a goal and an assist by Berdos), with Souvlatzis, Berdos, and Krommidas starting, and Mokris coming on as a substitute. With a 3-0 win over Azerbaijan, they then secured qualification to the 2nd qualifying phase (League A). In this match, Souvlatzis scored, coming on in the 46th minute in place of Areti (Berdos, Krommidas, Areti all started). Finally, they drew 2-2 with Hungary, with Mokris and Berdos starting and Krommidas coming on in the 73rd minute.
