Internationals review
The “black and white” internationals are back in Thessaloniki after the concludion of the two qualifying matches for the Nations League and the African Cup of Nations, with their minds already now on the upcoming game with AEK.
The historic and emotionally powerful victory of the Greek national team over England (1-2) at Wembley was experienced by Giannis Konstantelias , who came on in the 85th minute of the match. Since he was suffering from a virus, of course, he was left out of the squad at the last moment before the start of the match against Ireland, which our national team won 2-0, reaching the top of the Group 2 with 12 points after four matches.
Two assists, two wins for Mady Kamara and Guinea over Ethiopia (4-1 and 3-0). In the first game, the PAOK midfielder was in the starting XI (he was replaced in the 76th minute) and recorded a wonderful assist for the goal that made it 4-0. In the second game against Ethiopia (away) he took a starting jersey again (he was substituted in the 61st minute), while he also provided the assist for Guinea’s second goal. After the 4th matchday of the qualifiers, Guinea are in second place in their group, which provides direct qualification to the finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Omar Colley played for the full 90 minutes and wore the captain’s armband in Gambia’s two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar. A 1-1 draw was the result of the first game, and a 1-0 win for Gambia in the second. Gambia are in second place in their group, seeminly poised to be in the finals in Morocco.
On the contrary, Kiril Despodov and the Bulgarian national team had a tough time after only managing a 0-0 draw with Luxembourg (the PAOK man was a key player for 90 minutes) and a 5-0 defeat by Northern Ireland. The captain started in this game as well (he came off in the 85th minute) and even missed a penalty, while the hosts were leading 3-0. The Bulgarians are in third place in their group after the 4th matchday of the Nations League qualifiers.
A starteer twice for 90 minutes and captain Ali Samatta experienced two defeats with Tanzania (1-0 and 2-0 by the Democratic Republic of Congo) and it seems that they will not make it to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
With a bitter defeat and elimination, the course of the Greece Under-21 national team in the qualifiers for EURO 2025 came to an end. The «final» of Group 7 in Croatia, it was Croatia who emerged as the winner by a 3-2 scoreline, even though our national team came from 0-2 down to draw 2- 2 at one stage… The home team’s goal in the 76th minute and ultimately the defeat removed any hope of claiming second place, which would have given them a place in the finals. Konstantinos Balomenos was a starter (as he was in the friendly defeat against Slovakia, a match in which Lefteris Tasiouras also played in).
The Greek Under-19 team completed their presence in the Croatian friendly tournament with three draws. A 2-2 draw against Ireland with Koupenos, Bataula, Kosidis, and Mythos taking starting berths, and Politakis coming on as a substitute, and a 3-3 tie with Mexico with scorers Koupenos and Hatsidis, with Beleris, Kalaitsidis, Politakis, Hatsidis, and Kosidis starting, and Koupenos, Mythos, and Bataula coming off the bench. In the last friendly against Croatia, the youngsters also drew 1-1 with Hatsidis scoring Greece’s goal, and Koupenos, Bataula, Kosidis and Mythos starting, while Hatsidis, Beleris, Kalaitsidis and Politakis also got some playing time.
As for the Greek Under-17 team, they were defeated by the same score (2-0) in both friendlies they played away from home against Finland. In the first game, Mokris and Krommidas started, while Souvlatzis got some playing time off the bench, and in the second match (in which it should be noted that Greece had three shots off the woodwork, one of them by Souvlatzis) Souvlatzis and Mokris and Krommidas started.
Finally, Maximilian Scznauczner was a key player, he also recorded an assist in one of the three victories of the Polish Under-19 team (with Malta, Turkey, Gibraltar) and qualified for the Elite Round, which will decide the tickets for the EURO Under-19 finals.
