The Stoiximan Super League season is here! Paokfc.gr’s Rival Analysis gives you the lowdown on the Double-headed Eagle’s rivals in the battle for the 2024-25 title.

17.08.2024

ΑΕΚ

New era

AEK ended last season trophyless. Despite the fact that they were leading by 10 points four games before the final round of matches, PAOK made a legendary comeback and won the championship. At The Union, the big news of the year was clearly the change in ownership, with Dimitris Melissanidis leaving and leaving the team with Marios Iliopoulos taking over. The question marks are clearly many, but the goal for AEK will definitely be a return to trophies, especially after the failure to secure a place in the groups of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Almeida, season 3

Matias Almeida, despite the failure of last season, remains in the dugout and will continue to guide the team this season as well, with the aim of returning to the standards of his first year.

Many changes, lots of questions

Ponce left for the MLS, while Sidibe, Van Fert and Araujo also left as free agents. On the other hand, there were many arrivals. Koita, Odubajo, Brignoli, Strakosia, Tsiloulis, as well as Lamela and Pereira, have joined to raise the level of AEK, which also kept Cullens.

Aris

A strange season

The 2023-24 season ended on a positive note. Aris took 5th place in the championship and played in the Greek Cup final. The new season finds them full of question marks, with many changes in the squad and with dreams of getting into the top four to play again in the Play Offs, but also of having a good run in the cup.

Mantzios stays on

Akis Mantzios returned last August, changed the club’s fortunes and managed to lead it to a season, which, by all accounts, is considered successful, and that lead to the renewal of his collaboration with Aris for another season.

A vastly different group

Odubajo, Tzourasek, Matarita, Houtesiotis, Ferstrate, Ferrari, Ansarifard, Doukoure, Rupp, Christodoulopoulos, Delizisis, Bennett and Carlson all left. On the other hand, Moncu, Mayo, Sidklev, Sifuentes, Friedek, Diadi and Sisto were acquired and it remains to be seen on the pitch how Mantzios will bring his players together and get them to gel this season.

Athens Kallithea

Back at the highest level after 18 years

They had to wait a long time, and fight hard, but in the end they succeeded. Kallithea, after 18 years outside the top flight, will compete again at the top table and have dreams of establishing themselves. The season is bound to be tough, but everyone at the club believes they are back to stay.

A bench with an Italian air

The management chose to give the reins to Massimo Donati to lead the team this season. The former Milan, Atalanta and Celtic man is considered one of the rising technicians of the Italian school of football and he aims to use Kallithea to help raise his profile in the European market.

Radical changes

Kallithea proceeded with a total restructuring of their squad in order to change their level. Soiri, Baragan, Uldrikis, Pasalidis, Isimat-Mirin, Gelios, Sardelis, Hanousek, Valbuena, Diba, Motots and Gianni have all come in to bring experience and quality to the team, with the aim, initially, of staying in the top division.

Asteras Aktor

Restarting after a tough year

The eighth place achieved last season is not something that met the expectations and dreams of the people running the club. The club want to start strongly, aiming to participate in the Play Offs, at least in the places between 5-8 and claim the possibility of a ticket to Europe.

Trust in Rastavac

Despite last year’s up and down season, the management has renewed its confidence in Milan Rastavac, who has taken it upon himself to set up the team, aiming for as high a position as possible in the standings.

Major squad reshuffle

The summer of 2024 brought many changes to the team. Miritello, who was also the team’s top scorer, left and Adam has come in to fill his place. The defense was strengthened with Triantafyllopoulos, while Alcho replaced Lyratzis on the right wing. Jandaris, Munioz and Regic will give depth to the squad and more options for Rastavac.

Atromitos

A new starting point

Atromitos had a difficult season last year, ending it in 11th place, far away from their initial goals. The administration decided to review its approach and make significant changes, so that it could make an attempt to get into the top eight, proceeding with a total facelift of the squad and the staff in general.

The Pablo Garcia era

With Pablo Garcia taking over the reins following the departure of Sasha Ilic, the Peristeri team is moving into a new era. The Uruguayan coach, after a successful season in Serres, takes the next step and is looking towards the top end of the table.

Strong signings and ambitious targets

Key players such as Tsintotas, Keshrida, Azevedo, Tzavellas, De Bock, Conte, Aguibu Kamara, Valencia, Robaye, Andzielski, and Vergos all left, while Eder was the only key player to remain, with the line-up being radically changed. So the departures of many key players paves the way for a complete restructuring of the team.

The team was strengthened with players such as Koselev, Kinney, Brosson, Mansour, Ouedraogo, Mihorl, Warda, Baku, Carlitos and Van Weert. With these important additions, Atromitos is aiming to at least get into the top eight, while fifth place is an ambitious challenge.

NFC Volos

Rebuilding from the ground up for a new season

Volos continues its strategy of total transformation, as it has been doing for the last few years. In the 2023-24 season they struggled quite a bit, but finally managed to stay in the Super League. The team occupied the penultimate position in the regular season and ensured its safety through the Play Outs, overcoming Kifisia in the last matches.

A change in technical leadership

After the departure of Christos Contis, Volos welcomed Joaquin Gomez as the new coach. Although relatively young, Gomez brings new ideas and ambition to the team, aiming for a quiet but stable season at first, away from any flirting with relegation hopefully.

Extensive transfer moves and a renewed squad

Significant changes were made to the Volos playing staff. Sielis, Alho, Luna and top scorer Garcia left, while Pedro Conte, Villafanez, Altman, Correa and Miletic were brought in. The club continues to adjust their squad, aiming to be competitive in the new season.

Lamia

From sixth to uncertainty

Last year’s excellent run, which led them to sixth place and the Play Offs, belongs in the past. The faces that brought success have changed to a great extent and Lamia starts this year’s championship race as one of the big question marks.

Bench changes

After the departure of Leonidas Vokolos, Marinos Satsias took over the technical leadership. In addition, the presence of Babis Tennes in an advisory role adds experience to the team for the new season.

New roster, new challenges

Lamia lost a number of key players such as Koselev, Tsiloulis and Slivka, but they have strengthened with new additions such as Andrade, Mekic, Sandberg and Guido.

Levadiakos

A dynamic return to the Super League

Levadiakos returned to the Super League after a year away, dominating Super League 2, with a core of players from their previous stint in the top flight. The team has retained some key players for the third season in a row, while the management is willing to make new signings in order to secure their stay in the top flight as quickly as possible.

Change of coach and new ambitions

With Nikos Papadopoulos on the bench, Levadiakos aims to stay up, but ambitions even reach to getting into the top eight. Players like Groff, Tsapras, Hammond and Gianniotas will be decisive in this effort.

New additions and departures

Levadiakos are strengthened with Eramouspe, Ozbol, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Baltsi, as well as with a multitude of other players, such as Pedroso, Garavelis, Kassos, Yoke, Plegas and Lamarana. The team lost some players, most notably Nikas, but of course also the coach who guided them to promotion, Sokratis Ofrydopoulos. Levadiakos are still looking for a few more additions to complete their squad, focusing on a strong presence this season

Olympiacos

Historic year

Olympiacos made history last season by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League despite major changes in coaches, technical directors and players. That success put them straight into the League Phase of the UEFA Europa League, allowing them time to prepare in peace and plan for this season without the pressure of qualifying for Europe. After two sterile years on the domestic front, the Red and Whites will fight to return to league titles, and of course to try and have a good run in Europe as well.

Stability in the dugout

Jose Luis Mendilibar continues as the team’s coach, aiming to keep the team on the road to success. The Spanish coach wants to be able to follow up on last season, having the opportunity to build the team from the beginning , according to the man himself.

Important additions

Olympiacos made some important transfers with players such as Velde, Pirola, Kostinia, Jaremchuk, Stamenic, Anagnostopoulos and Danny Garcia joining, while many players left such as Quini, Karmo, Podence, Horta, Alexandropoulos, Richards, Navarro, Jovetic, Fortounis, El Arabi and Ibora.

OFI

New season, new goals

Last season did not go as the Cretans had hoped, with the team failing to achieve their main goal of entering the Play Offs, finishing in 10th place. Despite any difficulties, OFI are aiming to start the new season strongly with the goal of making the top eight and avoiding any relegation worries.

Dellas continues

Traianos Dellas, who took over during the previous season, remains in the dugout in order to bring stability and guide the team into the new season, this time having the opportunity to build the team from scratch according to his wishes.

Complete overhaul

This summer, OFI said goodbye to key players such as Vouros, Meyado, Toral and Torarinson, but made sure to replace them immediately with the additions of Jung, Karahaliou, Hatzitheodoridis, Borja Gonzalez, Christopoulos, Nous and Sengelia, expecting to raise the level in their performance and to fight for entry into the Play Offs of places.

Panathinaikos

Turning a page with the goal of returning to the top

Panathinaikos had many ups and downs last season. The team returned to the group stage of a European competition after seven years and were one of four contenders for the domestic league title. Despite the change of coach with the departure of Ivan Jovanovic and the arrival of Fatih Terim, Panathinaikos did not manage to find a rhythm in the final straight of the championship and finished fourth in the Play Offs, but saved something in the tank for the last match of the campaign, beating Aris in the Greek Cup fial to lift a trophy, and securing a ticket to next season’s European competitions.

Diego Alonso, the chosen one

Diego Alonso is the new coach of the Trifylli. The Uruguayan was the man chosen by Giannis Alafouzos to guide the team, aiming to return to the top of Greek football after 15 years without a league title.

A renewed roster with important additions

Panathinaikos made some important additions in the summer, such as Tete, Ingason, Max and also Maksimovic. Baldock was also a new acquisition, while the cases of Dragovski and Jedvaj, who remained in Athens, were also closed. Reinforcement in these positions was necessary after all, as some of the key cogs of the previous season had left, such as Bernard, Brignoli, Palacios and Juancar.

Panetolikos

Ups and downs last season

Panaitolikos finished 12th in the regular season of the previous season, but with the guidance of Yiannis Petrakis and the strategic readjustment to a trio in defense, the team managed to move up three places in the playoffs and ensure their stay in the finale with relative comfort.

They continue with the Cretan on the bench

Yiannis Petrakis won the battle of staying up last season – a battle that might have seemed lost in many moments – and with it the trust of the administration of the Agrinio team for this season.

Several, important departures

This summer many key players left, such as Joao Pedro, Sengelia, Tabitze, Karelis, Hatzitheodoridis, Fred and Bruno Duarte. The new additions include Celikovic, Pantelakis, Sieli, Mladen and Torrejon, while Mindevac and Layoud are expected to strengthen the attack.

    Panserraikos

Looking to establish themselves

The last two seasons were excellent for Panserraikos, as they not only made a strong return to the Super League from Super League 2, but also followed that with an impressive 7th place in the top flight, comfortably securing their stay. Now the question for the Serres club is to really establish themselves at teh top table.

New face on the bench

The biggest change in the team came with the departure of Pablo Garcia from the technical leadership. Michalis Grigoriou took the helm and worked during the summer so that the team was ready from the start to lay the foundations for staying up.

A radical restructuring of the squad

Bergstrom, Staikos and Bedancour remained and will continue to have a starring role. On the other hand, there were some important departures with Thymianis, Hovan, Warda, Peleas, Ouedraogo and Aleksic not continuing with the lions. Their gaps will be filled by Salazar, Kna, Deletic, Marinou in the attack, Kaptoum, Perutsi and Liasso in the midfield, and Hadakia, Karamanolis and Karasalidis in defense. Gugelashvili will be first choice in goal this year.
