Final Four Under-15s: the «little ones» of the Super League on the way to the cup

PAOK’s Under-15 side are called upon to defend their title in the Final Four of the Super League, which will be held in Lamia from May 18 to May 21. PAOK will face Panathinaikos in the second semi-final which will start at 20:00 and will be broadcast directly by NOVA (the first semi-final is between Olympiacos and Aris). The winners will face each other in the final on May 21, which will be held at the “Athanassios Diakos” Sports Complex of Lamia at 18:00. Let us remind you that last year’s PAOK Under-15 team (those born in 2008) won the championship by beating Olympiacos 1-0 in the final that took place at the Panthessaliko Stadium.

18.05.2024

Savva Konstantinidis’ and Kosmas Vakoufaris’ side comfortably won first place in their group in both phases of the championship (* this season had a new format) completing the regular season with a streak of 18 victories in 18 games, i.e. 54 points. They scored 68 goals and conceded just 7. By far the best performances of the season in terms of both groups. PAOK also registered the biggest victory of the year, beating Aris 9-0. And to think that this team was playing at the same time in the Macedonian Football Association Under-17 championship (with players two years older), in which they expect (the date has not been set) to compete in the final against Makedonikos. They also won the «Panagiotis Katsouris» international tournament, defeating Red Star 1-0 in the final (with a goal by Christoforos Lazaridis).

The team’s top scorer (and the group and the championship), is Konstantinos Souvlazis with 23 goals. Next is Nikos Chaldezos with 13, Aurelio Sefa with nine, Mario Matera with seven, Alexandros Bouklas with three goals and Yannis Topalidis, Fotis Metaxas, Grigoris Papadopoulos with two goals. Leon Szcnauzcner, Christos Demiris, Konstantinos Mischos, Christoforos Lazaridis, and Yiannis Tsialis all have one goal each.

In terms of appearances, Chaldezos and Hatsidis have 16, followed by Sefa, Lazaridis, Mischos, Papadopoulos with 15, while Souvlatzis has 14. 1,116 match minutes have been recorded by Chaldezos, 974 by Lazaridis, 949 by Hatsidis, 915 by Gersos, 818 by Kalpakis, and 815 by Mischos.

As for the assists, Chaldezos has 14, Lazaridis eight, Hatsidis six and Gersos, Matera, Sefa, Topalidis, Tsialis three each.

Also, the most goals in a match have been scored by Souvlatzis (six goals in the PAOK – Aris match) followed by Matera (three goals in the Aris – PAOK game), Sefa (three goals in PAS Ioannina – PAOK) and Chaldezos (three goals) in Makedonikos – PAOK).

Moreover, since 2013, when the championship of this age category began, PAOK has four victories, the same as Olympiacos, while Panathinaikos has one. It should be noted that neither PAOK nor Olympiacos have done the back to back, unless the conquests of 2020 and 2022 can be considered as such, as the championship of the 2020-21 season was not held due to the pandemic. PAOK won the last championship by defeating Olympiacos 1-0 in the final which took place at the Panthessaliko stadium (scorer Anastasios Sidiropoulos). In the semi-final, they met again with Panathinaikos, which they won 2-0 (the goals were scored by Anastasios Sidiropoulos and Konstantinos Toursounidis). The 2008 generation of PAOK (the youngsters who now make up the Under-16s, while some of them have also participated in the Under-17s) are champions, with the same coaching duo, that of Savvas Konstantinidis and Kosmas Vakoufaris.

It’s worth noting that the championship was held in three phases. In Phase I, the teams were divided into two groups (A’ and B’) based on geographical criteria. AEK, Asteras Tripoli, Atromitos, Olympiacos, OFI, Panathinaikos, Panachaiki and Panionios participated in the first group. In Group B, PAOK faced Ari, Volos, Makedonikos, Panserraikos, PAS Ioannina and Lamia. In Phase B, all teams were divided into four (C’, D’, E’, F) groups based on the final standings in groups A’ and B’. The 3rd Phase is the Final Four, from which the champion will emerge and in which the first from groups 3 and 5 (Olympiacos and PAOK, respectively) and the two that emerged from the play-offs (Panathinaikos and Aris) qualified.
