Panathinaikos vs. PAOK: Facts & Figures
Ahead of PAOK’s second leg contest against Panathinaikos in the semi-finals of the 2023-24 Betsson Greek Cup, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against the Greens.
- The last time the two teams met in the Greek Cup with Panathinaikos as host was on January 26, 2023 and the 1-1 draw gave the Double-headed Eagle the qualification, as they had won the first match between them 2-0 at the Toumba. That match was in the quarter-finals of the competition, while this time they meet in the semi-finals.
- In total, they have met 14 times in the Greek Cup including this season’s matches and in half of them the draw has brought them face to face at the semi-final phase.
- This is the 7th time and 3 of the previous 6 have required extra time or penalties to decide who progressed to the final. In the first of these, PAOK went through to the final with a 4-0 victory in extra time in 1984-85, after overturning a 2-0 defeat in Athens during 90 minutes.
- The last time they faced each other in the semi-finals was in 2016-17 and PAOK qualified impressively after overturning a 2-0 defeat at «Leoforos» with a 4-0 (14 Pelkas , 49′ Leo Matos, 73′ Shakhov, 83′ Prijovic) win advanced to the final, where they won the trophy with a 2-1 victory over AEK.
- Prior to the 2016-17 tie, their two-legged semi-final encounters did not go to 90 minutes, but extra time was required in their last match and penalties in the previous one. On both occasions it was Panathinaikos who progressed, at the OAKA in 2006-07 and at the Toumba in 1993-94.
- In 1948-49 and 1950-51 they met in the semi-finals in single-game ties and clinched one qualification each. The two odd matches took place in Thessaloniki and in 1948-49 Panathinaikos qualified with a 1-0 win, while in 1950-51 PAOK won 1-0.
- So far in his coaching career at PAOK, Razvan Lucescu has never been eliminated in knockout matches in the Greek Cup, and from 2017-18 until now he has celebrated qualification 14 times. In these games he has faced 13 different opponents, since there were two ties against Panionios. In addition to the Nea Smyrni team, his qualifications were against Trikala, Atromitos, Panachaiki, Asteras Tripoli, AEL, AEK, Olympiacos, Kalamata, Panathinaikos, Lamia, NFC Volos, Panserraikos.
