A dose of black and white madness in Scotland
Just when it seemed that PAOK may pay dearly for a poor 10-minute spell which saw them go two goals down, this Double-headed Eagle side just don’t give in. The visitors’ winning mentality that Razvan Lucescu has built into his players saw them turn the game on its head to win 3-2 and record their third win in as many group stage matches in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
One game, two different chapters. In the first half, PAOK dominated, had control, showed composure, and created several opportunities, with Schwab and Konstatelias failing to convert chances, but it still seemed that they had everything under control.
At the start of the second half, the football madness began. Aberdeen, who in the first half did not threaten the visitors at any point, found themselves leading by two goals by the 58th minute. Just five minutes into the half, Miovski made it 1-0 against the run of play, and in the 58th minute, Polvara scored on another counter-attack to make it 2-0 to the jubilant hosts.
Lucescu changed his team, threw on Samatta, Ozdoyev and Baba, and then Despodov, and the pattern of the match changed completely. The Double-headed Eagle penned Aberdeen back in their own half and managed to achieve an epic upset.
Initially, Despodov converted an assist from Kostantelias to reduce the deficit in the 73rd minute. Next it was the leader’s time. Koulierakis produced a precise cross, with the ball reaching the feet of Vieirinha, who without thinking too much finished clinically to make it 2-2 in the 84th minute.
And then came the grand finale. In the last phase of the match, PAOK won a penalty after Ozdoyev was fouled in the penalty area. Schwab stepped up and kept his cool from 12 yards to provide the winning goal – as well as the trigger for a black and white party at the final whistle in Aberdeen.
PAOK made it three wins out of three with this result in their UEFA Europa Conference League group and now turn their attention to the derby against AEK at the OPAP Arena on Monday (30.10).
