Happy Birthday Ingi!
Our defender Sverir Ingi Ingason turns 29 today, and PAOK FC would like to wish him many years of health, happiness and successes on both a personal and professional level.
Sverrir Ingi Ingason was born on August 5 1993 in Kopavogur, Iceland. He joined the youth academy of local side Breidablink in 1997 and he remained with the club until 2013, breaking into the first team.
At 18 he began to get playing time for Breidablik‘s feeder club Augnablik. He quickly got the attention of the parent’s club manager, Ólafur Kristjánsson, who made him one of his key players.
In the 2013–14 season he became one of the best players in the league. He was voted the best player of Breidablik and made it into the divisions team of the year. He made 60 appearances with Breidablik, and won the Iceland League Cup.
In January of 2014 he moved to Norwegian club Viking. He teamed up with four of his fellow countryman there and immediately won a place in the starting lineup. Playing alongside the captain of the Icelandic national team, Indri Sigurdsson, he produced some impressive performances and won the Player of the Season award for his team in 2014.
A year later it was time for a new challenge. Belgian club Lokeren proved the ideal destination for Ingason, who remained there until January of 2017, making 70 appearances and scoring one goal.
In the first half of 2017 he switched to La Liga with Granada, where he did exceptionally well even though the team did not manage to remain in the top flight. In the summer of the same year he transferred to Rostov for 1,2 million euros and continued to enhance his reputation.
Now a truly experienced player, he had absolutely no problem adjusting there and won a place in teh starting XI straight away. In his first season he played 30 appearances, while he also managed to score three goals.
In the 2018-19 season in Russia, Ingasson played in 17 games, scoring two goals.
At the same time, from January 2014 he has been a full Iceland international, having first played for the national youth sides. In 2016 he was a member of his country’s impressive run at the European Championships, while he also participated in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Since January 2019, he is a Double-headed Eagle player, making 113 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists. He has won one league title and two Greek Cups.
