- The first match with a French team came in the 1973-74 season in the second round of the Cup Winners’ Cup. After having eliminated Legia Warsaw, PAOK was drawn with Lyon. A 3-3 draw in France (10′ Lacombe, 51′ Di Nalo, 65′ Ravier – 44′ Aslanidis, 50′ Terzanidis, 81′ Sarafis), laid the foundations for qualification, which was confirmed with a 4-0 triumph at the Toumba (25′ Paris, 39′ Aslanidis, 61′ Paris, 81′ Terzanidis).
- For the first time in their history, PAOK then played in the spring in the European competitions, and in March 1974 they faced Milan in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, suffering a 3-0 defeat in Milan in the first leg, and a 2-2 draw in Thessaloniki.
- The next qualifier was against Sochaux, in 1982-83 in the first round of the UEFA Cup. A 1-0 victory in Thessaloniki (78′ Chr. Dimopoulos) put PAOK in the driving seat, and the tie was decided in extra time when Christos Dimopoulos scored to make it 1-1 in the 95th minute to make the tie 2-1 on aggregate in favor of the Double-headed Eagle, who were then eliminated by Sevilla in the second round.
- The next match against French opposition was against Paris Saint-Germain, and in addition to elimination from the first round of the UEFA Cup, it also brought a European ban for PAOK after crowd troubles at the Toumba during the second leg. PAOK had lost 2-0 in the first leg in Paris, and the score at half-time at the Toumba was again 2-0 in favor of Paris when violence broke out and the match was stopped and abandoned.
