Under-17s clinch final place [with pictures]

Favorites – let’s be realistic – do not really exist at this age group level. Nerves and anxiety are the key emotions. This Under-17 team, however, threw such feelings to one side and annointed themselves as title favorites with a 3-1 win over Atromitos in the semi-finals of the Super League Final Four tournament and they will now face Aris in the final on Wednesday (16.03, 15:00).

With Stefanos Tzimas playing the role of the major protagonist for PAOK, scoring two goals and contributing another assist, the Double-headed Eagle showed quality, patience and determination by going in front twice in the match before eventually going on to lock up the win and qualification to the final with a goal in the first minute of added time.

The first half was a pretty balanced affair with PAOK having the lion’s share of possession but only having two decent openings at goal. The first was from Adam in the ninth minute and the second came from Gitersos in the 22nd minute. Atromitos attempted to score on the counter attack and they had a chance in the 3th minute, but the Double-headed Eagle’s defenders managed to snuff out the threat.

In the second half, PAOK upped their effort, decisiveness, and tempo. On 50 minutes Tzimas combined well with Gitersos, and he threaded a pass back to Tzimas who scored to make it 1-0 to PAOK with a clinical finish. Two more opportunities then followed, the first for Goumas in the 52nd minute and then a second for Tzimas in hte 60th, but a second goal was not yet forthcoming for PAOK. Atromitos threatened in the 65th minute with a one-on-one chance but Angelidis saved well. But there was nothing he could do five minutes later when Atromitos managed to equalize in the 70th minute. PAOK’s response was immediate, with Gitersos finding Tzimas with a backheel pass in the 71st minute, and the latter crossing for Goumas to score with a header. PAOK then ended the game as a contest in the first minute of added time when Tzimas scored his second goal of the game and PAOK’s third.

PAOK lineup:

Angelidis, Georgiadis (88′ Kastidis), Deligiannis, Filon, Pasachidis, Scznaucner, Adam (66′ Vasilidis), Kottas, Gitersos (88′ Politakis), Goumas (93′ Papageorgiou), Tzimas.
