Under-19s end season as undefeated champions after six-goal thriller
The epilogue of the 2020-21 season was completed in fitting style for PAOK’s Under-19s with a thrilling game against Panathinaikos in Souroti. The match ended 3-3 as champions PAOK ended another season undefeated.
Panathinaikos started the game in determined mood and took a two-goal lead thanks to strikes in the ninth and 25th minutes. In the 42nd minute, however, PAOK reduced the arrears with a goal by Koulierakis from Smyrlis’ assist.
Stelios Malezas’ team then began the second half in perfect fashion and were on level terms in the 47th minute when Tsopouroglou equalized thanks to an assist again from Smyrlis.
Panathinaikos responded however, capitalizing on their only chance of the second half to score against the run of play to make it 2-3 in the 80th minute. PAOK refused to lose, however, and Smyrlis capped a fine individual performance in the 90th minute by levelling the match once more from the penalty spot to make the final score 3-3 and preserve the club’s proud unbeaten record at this level.
After the end of the match, the young Double-headed Eagle players were presented with the league trophy and their medals for the fourth consecutive season, and third without losing a single match – a quite remarkable record.
