The Golden Boy – MVP Edition
His name has ceased to be surprising and newsworthy. In less than just six months, he has followed through on the initial promise his talent offered. He has made people sit up and take notice, has been called up to the Greece national team, and has established himself as a key member of the starting XI. Ladies and gentlemen, Christos Tziolis is the BOX MVP for November.
Covid-19 has brought many changes in football. The shrinking of incomes and tightening of finances has put the brakes on many expensive transfers, with the result being that clubs have shifted their attention more to their own youngsters. And even though this was something already happening abroad, and something which we often envied, we now have the pleasure of experiencing it first hand.
Let’s be honest. We always wanted to have our very own Haaland, Ansu Fati or one of the other young players we watch in the big European leagues. Well, now we have our very own Golden Boy.
Christos Tzolis made his first team debut towards the end of last season. And to date, he has made 31 appearances, playing 1919 minutes, and in that time has scored nine goals and contributed five assists. Above all, he has gradually transformed from a talented youngster from the academy into one of the team’s major protagonists, who has shown the courage on several occasions to carry the team on his shoulders.
A typical example is November. In six games, Tziolis scored three goals and provided two assists. Most impressive of all, however, is the fact that in the two games against PSV Eindhoven, the most difficult of the month, he scored and assisted in both matches.
And that’s why in the poll for Novermber’s BOX MVP, the young ace received 63,49% of the votes to win the individual award, leaving the exceptional Andrija Zivkovic in second place, and the invaluable Omar El Kaddouri in third.
