PAOK vs. PSV Eindhoven: Facts & Figures
Ahead of PAOK’s UEFA Europa League group stage Matchday 3 contest against PSV Eindhoven, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous European encounters against Dutch opposition.
- This is the third time PAOK face PSV in European competition. Their previous two meetings were two-legged ties in the old UEFA Cup format in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. And both ties were in the third round, with Eindhoven progressing on both occasions and PAOK only managing one win from the four matches between them.
- In 2000-01 PAOK had eliminated Beitar and Udinese, while in 2001-02 they got passed FC Karnten and Pribram. The first match took place in Holland and ended in a 3-0 win for the hosts thanks to goals from Bruggink (5’) and Kezman (15’, 43’). At the Toumba, Bruggink scored again with PSV leaving Thessaloniki with a 1-0 win.
- On November 22 2001 PAOK welcomed the Dutch club again and defeated them 3-2 (35’, 70′ Yiasoumis, 39’ Udeze, – 19’ De Jong, 81’ Bruggink). In the second leg in Holland, PSV won 4-1 (1’, 58′ Venehoor, 32’ Gakhokidze, 90’ Van Bommel – 59’ Luciano) and progressed to the next round.
- In total, PAOK has faced four teams from Holland in European competition. PSV was the first, then came Alkmaar, Herenveen and Ajax. Eindhoven is the only team PAOK have beaten, while there have been eight draws and seven losses. Against Ajax, PAOK were playing in the Champions League qualifiers, while against the other clubs the competitions were the UEFA Cup and its modern equivalent, the Europa League.
- There has only been one match against Dutch opponents in which there were no goals scored. This came in a 0-0 draw in the 2009-10 against Herenveen in Holland. All of the other matches featured goals, while PAOK have failed to score both in that 0-0 draw, and also in the first matches in the 2000-01 season.
