Granada vs. PAOK: Facts & Figures
Ahead of PAOK’s UEFA Europa League Matchday 2 contest against Granada at the Estadio de los Carmenes, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous encounters against Spanish opposition.
- PAOK faces a Spanish team for the first time in 10 years. The last meeting with a club from Spain came on November 4 2010 at the Toumba, when PAOK met Villarreal in front 23.000 supporters. Andre Vieirinha was the man who scored the only goal of the game (1-0) following an assist from Pablo Garcia.
- In the first game between the two clubs which was in the Europa League group stage, PAOK lost 1-0 at the El Madrigal. Marco Ruben scored the game’s only goal in that game on Spanish soil.
- Overall, PAOK have faced Spanish opposition 10 times – all of which have been in the UEFA Cup, either in its former format, or in the now Europa League.
- The first encounter came on September 16 1975 against Barcelona who had a certain Johan Cruyff in the team. PAOK won 1-0 in Thessaloniki (72’ Koudas). In the return match, however, the Double-headed Eagle lost 6-1.
- After that, there were two matches against Sevilla in the 1982-83 and 1990-91 seasons, and both times PAOK were eliminated after a 4-0 loss in Spain, despite having won 2-0 in Thessaloniki. In their second meeting, qualification was decided on penalties in favor of Sevilla following two 0-0 draws.
- In the 1997-98 season PAOK met Atletico Madrid and a 5-2 defeat in Spain meant there was not much hope for PAOK to turn the tie around. What followed in the return leg, though, was an astonishing match that ended 4-4 – one of PAOK’s most memorable games in Europe.
- In those 10 matches against Spanish opposition, PAOK have recorded three wins, three draws and four losses. At home, PAOK have won three and drawn twice (no defeats), while away from home PAOK have lost four and drawn once.
- PAOK have scored 11 goals against Spanish teams, with Kostas Frantzeskos scoring twice in the matches against Atletico. Vieirinha is the last PAOK player to have scored against a team from Spain, while Oliveira, Zagorakis, Zoumboulis, Maragos, Dimopoulos, Kostikos, Anastasiadis, and Koudas have all for their names on the scoresheet.
