PAOK vs. Omonia: Facts & Figures
Ahead of PAOK’s UEFA Europa League 2020-21 Matchday 1 contest against Omonia, paokfc.gr puts you in the picture about the background to the match, as well as a look back at our previous history in the group stages of the competition.
- This is the second time that PAOK are facing Omonia in European competition. The two teams met previously in the 1976-77 season in the Champions Cup with the Double-headed Eagle progressing from their second round tie after a 2-0 (39’ Koudas, 87’ Sarafis) away win and a 1-1 (67’ Sarafis – 33’ Dimitriou) draw at the Toumba.
- The two teams have also met in the Alpha Ethniki, when cubs from Cyprus took part in the competition. In the 1972-73 season PAOK defeated them 3-1 in Thessaloniki, and again by the same scoreline in Nicosia.
- PAOK have competed 8 times in the group stages of the Europa League, more than any other Greek club. The Double-headed Eagle will be competing now for the ninth time, while ΑΕΚ has competed seven times, Panathinaikos six, and Olympiacos three times.
- 48 – the number of games that PAOK have played in the group stage of the Europa League. The club have won 16 times, drawn 14 times, and suffered 12 defeats. In four of the team’s eight participations, PAOK have ended the group stage with three wins, while in the other four seasons it has competed, PAOK has recorded just one win.
- 50 – the number of goals PAOK have scored in the Europa League, with the 50th strike going in on November 24 2016 in the superb 3-2 win over Fiorentina in Italy. Shakhov opened the scoring at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, and it was his strike that also was the 50οth goal in the Double-headed Eagle’s history.
- September 15 2005 was PAOK’s debut in the group stage of the Europa League, which was then known as the UEFA Cup. Metalurh Donetsk were the opponents, and Dimitris Salpingidis’ 25th-minute goal was the club’s first strike in the competition. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
- On December 15 2010, PAOK defeated Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 thanks to a goal from Salpingidis in the 61st minuteο following an assist from Stefanos Athanasiadis, and that win gave the club its first qualification to the Round of 32 of the competition.
- 3 wins and 3 draws were earned in both the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons, keeping the team’s unbeaten record intact. In four of the club’s right participations in the competitions, PAOK has progressed to the knockout stages.
- 11 – number of goals that Stefanos Athanaiadis has to his name in the competition for PAOK, making him the team’s top scorer. Next up is Dimitris Salpingidis with 6, and Adelino Vieirinha with 4.
- 28 – teh number of minutes that Athanasiadis needed to score three goals on September 18 2014 and become the first PAOK player to score a hat-trick in a European match. It was also the fastest hat-trick in the Europa League, a record that lasted until September 2017, when Manuel Fernandez did it in 17 minutes in Lokomotiv’s match against Zlin.
