The trophy-winning goal by Akpom
It’s the second time this season that we skip the poll and directly award the Best Goal accolade, but… we couldn’t help it. Chuba Akpom’s goal in the Greek Cup final against AEK Athens is our Regency Casino Best Goal of May.
The season marathon concluded in May with two historic games: the away victory over PAS Giannina that sealed an undefeated league for the black-and-whites and the Greek Cup win over AEK Athens that landed PAOK their first ever domestic double.
Chuba Akpom scored in both encounters, while Yevhen Shakhov netted a header just seconds after coming off the bench in Zosimades. The goals against PAS Giannina were great, but none can compare with the outstanding finish of AK47 in the Olympic Stadium of Athens.
The Greek Cup final was a hard-fought affair. PAOK were in control, AEK Athens had a secondary role and just tried to create danger by crossing. It was obvious that one goal would decide the encounter.
The class and quality of Răzvan Lucescu’s troops made all the difference. Dimitris Pelkas chased a lost ball outside AEK’s box, evaded Hult, crossed and Akpom scored an overhead kick to give PAOK the trophy.
