«Victory on Sunday is the only thing on my mind»

Răzvan Lucescu spoke to Novasports TV ahead of Sunday’s encounter against Levadiakos. Here is what the Romanian coach said:

18.04.2019

On how the week transpired:

«It was a good week with fine training. We concentrated a lot. Today’s session was fantastic with huge intensity. We are in good condition ahead of Sunday’s game and very determined«.

Regarding Akpom being the only question mark this week:

«I don’t know if he has already adjusted to wearing that brace –hopefully he has. He will be included in the squad, regardless if he starts or not. He had a very good session today as well. Jabá was also sidelined and now he is improving constantly«.

Regarding his troops trying to remain focused only on the game:

«They have always been focused. Even in Larissa, we played well and created many opportunities to win, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. Our rivals managed to equalize with a fantastic goal. The pitch was unplayable, but we still were able to edge closer to the league title. But we need one more victory –although we have already won on the pitch, we need to win officially in our home ground.

Show me a team that lost a league title to some committees and started the following season with a point deduction. You won’t find many. Actually we have already won the title, but not officially yet.

We went through ups and downs throughout the season, several injuries kept us back. But we proved we can overcome adversity and are very close to clinching the league title on Sunday.

Prijović was transferred out, new players joined the team and had to adjust to their new surroundings. That is why I insist we have a strong group. We will celebrate the league title and we have to throw a proper party. Perhaps it’s not the ideal moment to say that, but we have to celebrate. There is also the second leg of the Greek Cup semi-finals ahead, we have the upper hand and it’s important to advance to the final and secure the double«.

Regarding Levadiakos:

«I don’t want to talk about our rivals. The outcome of the game depends solely on us. Whoever gets to play, they need to give their best in order to win and celebrate the league title«.

Whether he considers himself part of PAOK history already:

«I never focus on such situations. My aim is to win the upcoming match and the league title. That is the source of my satisfaction. I don’t look beyond that«.

Regarding PAOK being one of the few teams still undefeated in European leagues:

«To be honest, only a few sides have achieved that. We are now preparing for our last home game, but we don’t even realize it, being so much focused on our goal. Perhaps we will realize it afterwards. Let me only note our mentality. This is a winning mentality. It’s a fantastic undefeated streak that would have been impossible without this mentality, without fighting to win every match. There are times when everything can go wrong, even for teams investing millions. No matter the problems we were facing, my team always entered the pitch to fight and win. That’s a good sign, because my players don’t want to drop points. On the other hand, we need to have balance, because you can’t achieve anything in football without it«.
