Sérgio Oliveira joins PAOK

PAOK FC announce they have signed Sérgio Oliveira on loan from FC Porto for the next six months. The Portuguese midfielder will be sporting No 26.

31.01.2019

Born on 2 June 1992 in Paços de Brandão, Portugal, Sérgio Miguel Relvas de Oliveira took his first steps at the academy of the local club. In 2002, at the age of 10, he was spotted by FC Porto scouts and immediately joined their youth system.

His progress was meteoric and on 17 October 2009 he made his debut for the Porto senior team in a Portuguese Cup encounter against Sertanense FC, becoming the youngest player ever to sport the Dragons’ jersey. He celebrated the occasion by providing Hulk with an assist… A few months later, he signed his first professional contract and won the Portuguese Cup.

In the following season, he was shipped on loan to SC Beira Mar, where he featured in 6 encounters. In 2011-12, he was loaned to KV Mechelen and then to FC Penafiel, before returning to Porto’s B side. He played in Portugal’s second tier, conjuring up 5 goals and 3 assists in 30 matches.

He spent two seasons at FC Paços de Ferreira (2013-15), where he reached his peak, featuring in 65 matches and scoring 6 goals. His performances for “Os Castores” allowed him to return to the Estádio do Dragão.

Once back at Porto, he had to wait for his opportunity. He snatched it eventually and played in 18 matches, scoring 3 goals and served 3 assists. He didn’t have an ideal start to the 2016-17 season though and in the following January he was shipped on loan to FC Nantes, coached back then by Sérgio Conceição. In six encounters in the French league, he came off the bench but didn’t score.

He returned to FC Porto by the time Sérgio Conceição took over the reins of the team. Sérgio Oliveira recorded his best season stats-wise, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists , proving a vital cog as the Dragons won the league title. His performances also caught the eye of Fernando Santos who called him to the national team of Portugal.

He started strongly in the current season, conjuring up 2 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches. Sérgio Oliveira has played for all Portugal national youth sides and has three caps with the senior Portuguese side.

PAOK moved under the radar and, on the last day of the winter transfer window, he brought the Portuguese midfielder to Thessaloniki on loan, with an option to make the deal permanent by the end of the season.
