PAOK sign Ingason
PAOK FC announce the signing of Sverrir Ingi Ingason from FC Rostov. The Icelandic centre-back penned a contract linking him with the “Double-Headed Eagle” until 2022 and will sport No 4.
Sverrir Ingi Ingason was born on 5 August 1993 in Kópavogur, Iceland. He joined the academy of local Breiðablik UBK in 1997 and stayed at the club until 2013, having made it to their senior team.
At the age of 18 he started featuring for Breiðablik’s affiliated club Augnablik. His performances attracted the attention of Breiðablik’s head coach Ólafur Kristjánsson and he invited him to train with the senior side.
He featured in 60 encounters of Breiðablik, won an Icelandic League Cup, was voted in the best XI of 2013 by his peers and established himself as one of the most talented players of the country.
In January 2014, he moved to Norwegian club Viking, where he became almost instantly a starter, alongside four of his countrymen –Iceland captain Indriði Sigurðsson among them. Ingason was voted MVP of the season in his new team.
One year later, he opted for a new change. He signed for KSC Lokeren and it proved a perfect fit. He stayed in Belgium until January 2017, making 70 appearances and scoring one goal.
He moved to Andalusia for the first semester of 2017, joining Granada CF. He maintained his high level of performances, but his team couldn’t avoid relegation. In the summer of 2017, FC Rostov paid 1,2 million euros to secure his services.
He adjusted in no time there as well and became a regular. In his first season in Russia, he conjured up 3 goals and 30 encounters.
In the current season, Ingason played 17 games and scored twice for FC Rostov.
Since January 2014, he has been a member of the Iceland national team, after having played for all their youth national sides. He was included in the squads that participated in UEFA Euro 2016 and FIFA World Cup 2018.
