An old acquaintance to referee the Toumba leg

Dutch referee Bas Nijhuis has been assigned the encounter between PAOK and Östersunds FK for the UEFA Europa League play-offs.

10.08.2017

Born on 12 January 1977 in Enschede, Bas Nijhuis is a butcher by trade. He went into refereeing at a young age, inspired by his father. He made his debut in Eredivisie in March 2005 in an encounter between SC Heerenveen and RKC Waalwijk.

He earned his FIFA badge in 2007, starting from friendly international encounters and the qualifying stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Since 2009 he was also appointed to group stage matches in European competition. He climbed to the “Elite Category” of UEFA referees in 2011.

His name brings back good and bad memories to PAOK fans. He was the one to officiate the historic away victory in White Hart Lane against Tottenham Hotspur. But he also came close to denying PAOK that win with his decisions. As the “Double-Headed Eagle” were leading 2-0, Nijhuis sent off Stafylidis for a handfoul (while the ball hit his body instead) and the English side reduced distances with the penalty awarded. In the second half, he waved “play” after a vicious tackle of Defoe on Contreras.

It’s not the first time that the Dutch referee will visit Greece. He was appointed for an encounter between Olympiacos and Borussia Dortmund for the UEFA Champions League group stage and also took charge of a home match of AEK Athens against HNK Hajduk Split for the UEL group stage. He also refereed the Arsenal vs Olympiacos match of September 2015. All Greek sides have won their matches with Nijhuis in charge.

In Toumba he will be accompanied by his countrymen Rob van de Ven and Dave Goossens, the assistant referees, with Allard Lindhout acting as fourth official. Nikolai Ivanov of Russia will be the UEFA Referee Observer.
