Kick off on the right foot in Toumba
Friendlies can seldom provide the whole picture of a team’s potential midway through the summer. But they can be important confidence-boosters for players and fans alike.
In Friday’s main rehearsal before their European engagement, PAOK prevailed 2-0 over Anorthosis Famagusta FC, but that is of lesser importance to Aleksandar Stanojević. The Serbian tactician wanted to check out other things and take notes for some final fine-tuning.
He saw his troops dominate the encounter from start to finish without facing danger in their own box. They created several chances to score, their attacks were swift and successful and their physical condition level is quite satisfactory taking into account that it’s the middle of the summer.
He saw Rodrigo Rey ooze confidence and command his area. He saw Dorian Lévêque excel in his defensive duties and make the right calls in attack. He saw a part of Róbert Mak’s potential. He also saw the old players of PAOK combining flawlessly –and that is very important ahead of the first official games of the season.
PAOK head coach started with a 4-3-3 formation and, in the last quarter, he switched to 4-2-3-1. The final score doesn’t reflect the vast dominance of the home side on Toumba pitch.
Djalma Campos scored the opener with a magnificent shot in the 5th minute and, a few minutes later, Aleksandar Prijović spread such a panic in Anorthosis’s box, that the defenders beat their own goalkeeper!
As the match progressed, the pace dropped. After the interval, there were fewer chances to score, but nevertheless PAOK came close three times and Ariel Harush beat Mak twice and Prijović once.
