Message on the Pontian Greek Genocide Remembrance Day

The message of PAOK FC president Ivan Savvidis on 19 May, the day we remember the Pontian Greek Genocide.

19.05.2017

Dear brothers and sisters!

Every year, on 19 May, the day of mourning for Pontian Greek Genocide, we remember tragic events that happened a century ago –our minds wander to those mountain roads, our forefathers’ homes, our beautiful churches.

Every year, our hearts cry out, realizing the tragic end of Pontos’ long history.

The Pontian Genocide Remembrance Day shifts our focus on the basic principles of Pontian character: courage, national dignity and deep love for Country.

On this day, million hearts separated by thousands of miles around the world beat in unison. Despite tough circumstances, we maintained our ethnic character and we are able to say every time with pride: “I am a Pontian!”

Much has been done for the world to learn about the Asia Minor Disaster, but there is still much work to be completed. I will never stop repeating that our efforts will be infinitely more effective if we join forces to achieve a common goal: the world-wide acknowledgement of the Pontian Greek Genocide.

Only thorough analysis and public condemnation of crimes against humanity can save the world from repetition of such tragic events.

May the innocent victims rest in peace! May the Lord protect us from new upheaval and wars!

Sincerely,

Ivan Savvidis
