U20s prevail 1-0 over Panathinaikos
The U20 side of the “Double-Headed Eagle” defeated their Panathinaikos’s counterparts in a hard-fought encounter in Souroti, thanks to a second-half strike by Doumtsis.
The encounter got off to a strong start, but niggling fouls on both sides and turnovers in midfield interrupted the flow of play. A low long-range strike by Doumtsis against the post in the 32nd minute was the highlight of the first half.
After the interval, PAOK entered the pitch with all systems go and launched numerous attacks on Panathinaikos’s goal. They got their reward in the 54th minute, when Papathanasiou teed up Doumtsis in the 6-yard box and the latter netted the opener for the “Double-Headed Eagle”. In the same play, a Greens’ player received his second booking for protesting and was sent off.
Having numerical superiority and the lead, the pupils of García and Papavasiliou upped their game and carved out several opportunities to score until the final whistle, mainly through Tzovaras and substitute Stathopoulos. The scoreline remained unchanged and PAOK secured another three-pointer.
