PAOK’s six in Greece U17s
Six players of the “Double-Headed Eagle’s” youth sides featured for Greece in the Elite Round of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
Unfortunately, Greece’s 3-0 defeat by Poland deprived them of qualification to the Croatia finals. The young Greeks lost 4-0 Portugal in the first group encounter and then defeated Spain 1-0.
Lefteris Lyratzis, Giannis Michailidis, Alexandros Gargalatzidis, Antonis Gaitanidis, Giorgos Vrakas and Serafim Maniotis played in all three encounters of the Elite Round Group 3 held in Portugal.
Lyratzis started all three matches and scored the winning goal against Spain. Michailidis and Gaitanidis also were in all three initial line-ups. Gargalatzidis started the match against Portugal. In the encounters against Spain and Poland, he came off the bench in the 48th and 41st minute respectively. Maniotis started against Spain and Poland, while Vrakas was introduced in the 49th minute of the encounter against the Spaniards.
Spain won the group and advance to the finals. Portugal finished second, but will wait for the completion of Elite Round action to know their fate.
