José Alberto Cañas joins PAOK
PAOK FC announce the signing of José Alberto Cañas from RCD Espanyol. The Spanish midfielder penned a three-year contract with the “Double-Headed Eagle”.
Born on 27 May 1987 in Jerez de la Frontera, in Andalusia, he joined the youth academy of Real Betis Balompié at a very young age.
After going through the ranks, he made his senior debut in 2009, in a home loss to Club Atlético de Madrid. He became a regular member of the team in 2010, when they were featuring in Segunda División. José Alberto Cañas made 16 appearances and contributed to the club’s return to the top-flight league.
In the following two years, he was a regular at Betis and enjoyed full seasons. His sound performances saw him getting established as one of the Primera División’s best defensive midfielders, attracting interest from English Premier League clubs.
In April 2013 he decided not to extend his contract with the Andalusian outfit and agreed terms with Swansea City AFC. He adjusted perfectly in English football and played 35 times for the Welsh outfit. He decided not to continue though and returned to his homeland, signing for RCD Espanyol a three-year contract. He stayed in Barcelona for two seasons, featuring 48 times in La Liga and Copa del Rey.
