PAOK U17s crowned Greek champions
They were the better team and proved it both in the semi-final and in the final. PAOK U17s celebrate their deserved Super League title, after prevailing 2-1 over Xanthi in Peristeri Stadium.
The troops of Angelos Zazopoulos and Pablo García showed that they have the individual talent and the collective spirit and mentality to claim on the pitch what they deserve: top place. Now they will prepare for their participation UEFA Youth League where they will compete against the top European clubs.
PAOK and Xanthi had no secrets from each other, having played so many times during regular season. They went into the pitch determined for the title. The “Double-Headed Eagle” dominated proceedings throughout the encounter.
The first opportunity of the encounter was created by Xanthi, but Siampanis was there to save. PAOK took the initiative afterwards and scored the opener in the 18th minute through Chatzistravos. Eight minutes later, Xanthi leveled with a header, but the “Double-Headed Eagle” regained the lead before half-time. In the 43rd minute, Lyratzis made it 2-1 with a header following a cross by Lyratzis.
After the interval, PAOK were much better than their rivals and kept pushing for a third goal that would finish off the match. Gargalatzidis was denied by the woodwork and also missed four classic opportunities to extend his team’s lead. The only thing Xanthi could do is search for an equalizer in the dying minutes of the encounter, but to no avail.
