International calls and fixtures
PAOK players have already been in action for nine consecutive months, but they forget about fatigue when it’s time for international duty. Here are their fixtures in the next ten days:
Greece will not be travelling to France for the Euro 2016 finals this summer and everybody is now focusing on the next day and the 2018 FIFA World Cup challenge. Ahead of the friendly encounters against Montenegro and Iceland, both to be held in “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium, head coach Michael Skibbe included Αkexandros Tziolis and Giorgos Tzavellas in his list. Dimitris Pelkas has been called just for the Iceland match. All three players are having an excellent season and deservedly made the list. On the contrary, Stefanos Athanasiadis, Markos Vellidis and Stelios Kitsiou have not been included.
Regarding Greece’s youth national teams, Charis Charisis has joined the U21s for the encounters against Albania and Israel, corresponding to the qualifying stage of the 2017 UEFA European U21 Championship. Giannis Mystakidis was also called, but has been forced to withdraw after picking up an injury during the AEL Kalloni match. To replace him, head coach Antonis Nikopolidis turned to Efthymis Koulouris, who has been having a very good season with lots of goals at Anorthosis Famagusta on loan from PAOK.
Tasos Dimitriadis, who recently made his Super League debut for the “Double-Headed Eagle” joined Greece’s U19s along with his PAOK U20 teammate Manos Patralis, for the Elite Round of the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. Greece have been drawn against tough opposition, facing England, hosts Spain and Georgia in Group 1. Siampanis, Chatzidimpas, Dimitriou, Tzovaras and Νοukaris are all included in Greece U17 squad that will travel to France to face the hosts, Austria and Iceland for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite Round.
Slovakia and Albania are preparing for the Euro 2016 finals. Róbert Mak and Erik Sabo have been called by Ján Kozák for the friendly encounters against Latvia and the Republic of Ireland. Ergys Kace’s Albania will face Luxembourg and Austria. All three players are aiming to impress their coaches and guarantee their place in this summer’s tournament.
Garry Rodrigues returned to action last weekend against AEL Kalloni and has travelled to Cape Verde for the two matches against Morocco that will determine first place in their qualifying group for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Gojko Cimirot and Τerry Antonis were also called for international duty by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Australia respectively, but their injuries will keep them in Thessaloniki.
