PAOK qualify for the 1970 semis
Without hitting top speed –it was mid-June after all-, PAOK prevailed 1-0 over Panionios thanks to a brilliant shot by Giorgos Koudas and made it to the Greek Sup semi-finals
The “Double-Headed Eagle” faced Panionios in the quarter-finals and the tie was decided by an inspired Giorgos Koudas’ long range shot.
The press were severe on the team, despite their victory. Here is one clipping for example:
“PAOK eliminated Panionios and that is important. Their performance however left much to be desired and the attending fans were disappointed by yet another bad performance of the team”.
“There was the extenuating factor of Sarafis’s absence – whenever he has been absent, the team suffered for it. But that is just an excuse, as there was a general collapse, errors came from all sides, on the pitch and on the bench. PAOK were lazy and incoherent and their players lacked their usual liveliness”.
“…Fortunately for them, Koudas had a moment of brilliance, creating and netting the only goal of the encounter after 61 minutes blasting a shot from long range”.
“Christodoulou made a series of fine saves to keep a clean sheet. Panionios were also mediocre in attack, Dedes being the only one to stand out. Christodoulou, Makris, Fountoukidis and Kontogiorgos were the best of PAOK, while Dedes and Papasikas had a solid display for Panionios”.
