When the league of 1985 was sealed…
PAOK played a goalless draw against Panionios in Nea Smyrni and secured the league title of 1984-85 with one matchday left on the calendar.
The “Double-Headed Eagle” had already put a healthy distance between them and their rest of title contenders, with their 1-0 victory over Iraklis in the neutral ground of Trikala on 21 April 1985. They sealed their triumph on 9 June 1985 in Nea Smyrni.
They kept their 3-point distance from Panathinaikos, as the Athens outfit were held to a home draw by Pierikos. That distance meant PAOK were champions, as back then the point system awarded 2 points for victory and 1 for draw.
PAOK came close to scoring in the 10th minute, when Siggas’s header was palmed away in extremis by Filippis. Panionios made Stergioudas work in the 80th minute, when he saved Barzov’s direct free-kick.
PAOK fans stormed to the airport to welcome the champions (photo), just as they had done after the away victory over Panathinaikos.
PAOK’s line-up on that day: Stergioudas, Τsourelas, Αlavantas, Jurišić, Baniotis, Skartados, Siggas (70′ Κarasavvidis), Vasilakos, Dimopoulos (46′ Αlexandridis), Paprica, Κostikos.
