Happy birthday, Asterios!
PAOK FC and the whole black-and-white family wish all the best to Asterios Giakoumis, who celebrates his 27th birthday on this Sunday 3 May.
He was acquired by PAOK in the summer of 2010, just as Olympiacos and Panathinaikos were interested in signing the young prospect. His impressive displays on goal for Agrotikos Asteras and for Greece’s U21 led him to the Superleague.
His U21 international debut on 3 March 2010 at Doncaster signaled an important 2-1 away victory for Greece over England.
He started playing football at Olympiacos Kymina and was spotted there by Agrotikos Asteras’ coaching staff. He worked hard and made the most of the opportunity handed to him. He became the starting goalkeeper of Asteras and kept a clean sheet for 11 consecutive matches. In December 2010, he was voted best goalkeeper of Greece’s 2nd Division by his peers.
On the last day of the transfer window in the summer of 2010, he signed a five-year contract with PAOK. In 2011-12, he was shipped on loan back to Agrotikos Asteras.
