PAOK suffer first away defeat
Super League frontrunners PAOK suffered their first away defeat on matchday 13, succumbing 4-2 to SKODA Xanthi at Pigadia.
“Double-Headed Eagle” fans flocked to Xanthi to support Angelos Anastasiadis’ troops. PAOK found themselves chasing after their rivals early in the match, Pantelis Kapetanos scoring the opener in the 6th minute.
The visitors improved their performance after falling behind and equalized in the 37th minute through a fine combination of Eyal Golasa and Stelios Kitsiou and a neat finish by Stelios Athanasiadis.
The same pattern appeared in the second half. SKODA Xanthi restored their lead in the 47th minute with Adrián Lucero. That goal was preceded by an apparent foul of Kapetanos on Dimitris Papadopoulos that went unpunished by the referee.
PAOK’s territorial superiority was fruitless, as they were struggling to create conditions for a new equalizer. Instead they found themselves exposed at the back and Silva Cleyton extended Xanthi’s lead by culminating yet another counterattack. Róbert Mak revived the visitors’ hopes in the 82nd minute, reducing distances to 3-2.
The “Double-Headed Eagle” applied more pressure, but were increasingly vulnerable to Xanthi’s fast breaks, that permitted Kapetanos to complete his brace and seal the home side’s 4-2 win in the last minutes.
