Match Report

A night of pure magic

05.11.2020

After a first half in which the scoreline and the performance suggested that visiting PSV Eindhoven were on course for victory, what followed in the second half was a surprise to everyone. The final score? PAOK 4 Eindhoven 1, on a night which the PAOK family will remember for quite some time.

The European debut of the Double-headed Eagle’s recently installed coaching team yielded a great victory over a strong PSV Eindhoven side. Even though the Dutch side had control of the game in the first half as well as a lead to protect thanks to Zahavi’s penalty, in the second half PAOK fought back in some style, with the main protagonists of a superb turnaround Αndrija Ζivkovic, Stefan Schwab and Christos Tziolis. In a dizzy 20-minute spell, that trio helped PAOK score four goals and claim their first win of the group stage and take an important step towards qualifying for the next round.

PSV opened the scoring in the 20th minute, despite having not really fashioned a clear scoring chance until the moment that Donyell Malen surged into the penalty area and was brought down by Schwab. Zahavi stepped up to slot home the spot-kick, sending Zivko Zivkovic the wrong way to make it 0-1.

The ony other chance of the half fell again to Zahavi, but he failed to beat Zivkovic when thr0ugh one-on-one against the home ‘keeper.

In the second half, Pablo Garcia kept the 4-3-3 formation but changed the personnel, with Colak and Biseswar making way for Swiderski and Tziolis, and it was a change that paid off.

PAOK began the second half looking determined and energetic as they went out to try and turn things around, and the equalizing goal came quickly in the 47th minute with Schwab diverting a shot from Andrija Zivkovic into the net.

The two players switched toles in the 55th minute with the Serbian scoring to put the home side in front. Just three minutes later, Tziolis took possession of the ball on half-way and surged forward before curling in an angled shot to make it 3-1.

Further gloss was added to the scoreline by Zivkovic in the 66th minute when he once again found the net, this time following an assist from Tziolis to make the final score 4-1.

PAOK managed to manage the remainder of the game flawlessly, with the home goal rarely threatened, and sealed three vital points.

Team line-ups:
