Match Report

Rampant display and an emphatic win

14.01.2024

PAS Ioannina may have tried to spring a few surprises on PAOK at points during the match, but PAOK were once again back to their swashbuckling best form on Sunday night. Razvan Lucescu’s team produced an excellent performance to defeat the Epirus club 4-0 at Toumba Stadium on Matchday 18 of the 2023-24 Stoiximan Super League.

PAS Ioannina tried to take advantage of a somewhat sluggish start by the home side, but they failed to convert some good early possession into opportunities. And from the 10th minute onwards, the Double-headed Eagle found their form and began to methodically control the match and create scoring chances.

In the 21st minute, Tzimas and then Koulierakis were unable to find the net from inside the penalty area, before Baba essentially «unlocked» the game in the 29th minute. Despodov took the initial shot, Kleyman made a save, and the incoming Baba made it 1-0 with a confident finish.

Sastre then saw Kleyman make a great save from one of his dangerous crosses, while late in the first half PAS also saw Leo failed to beat Kotarski when through one-on-one against the PAOK ‘keeper.

The picture in the second half was completely different. PAOK came out in determined mood and did not give the visitors any room to manouvre, effectively ending the game as a contest within eight minutes of the restart.

Initially, Meite in the 49th minute made it 2-0 with an incredible lob, while in the 53rd minute it was Tzimas’ turn to put his name on the scoresheet with a header from Sastre’s excellent cross to make it 3-0.

In the 66th minute, the hosts found a fourth goal to put the icing on the cake. Sastre attempted another cross from the right, the ball took a deflection of Rienstra and ended up in the back of Kleyman’s net with the PAS custodian unable to react.

Razvan Lucescu then threw Konstantelias , Brandon and A. Živkovic into the game to add some fresh legs, with the Spaniard going on to miss two great opportunities, initially after a magical piece of play by Konstantelias , while in the 83rd minute Zivkovic also missed a one-on-one with Kleyman. Luck wasn’t on Brandon’s side either in the 87th minute when the Spaniard fired in a shot which came back off the crossbar.

PAOK then returned to winning ways in the league and now turn their attention to Wednesday’s (17.01, 17:00) game in Serres against Panserraikos for the quarter-finals of the Betsson Greek Cup.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Kotarski, Sastre (Lyratzis 80′), Kedziora, Koulierakis, Baba, Ozdoev (Marcos Antonio 73′), Meite, Despodov (A.Zivkovic 68′), Taison, Murg (Konstantelias 68′), Tzimas (Brandon 68′).

PAS Ioannina: Kleyman, Soria (Panagou 88′), Pantelakis, Eramouspe, Kiakos, Karachalios (Efford 72′), Gino, Bakadimas (Liassos 72′), Rienstra, Leo (Rossero 62′), Conde (Balan 62′).
