Opening day victory

Although it was difficult, PAOK had the answers to the questions posed by a battling Panserraikos at Toumba Stadium and managed to get the three points they wanted to start the new 2024-25 Stoiximan Super League season win a win.

Razvan Lucescu
was forced into some changes, due to the absences of Taison, Baba, Kotarski, Otto and the suspended Michailidis, giving Chalov and Tsiftsis starting berths for the first time.

PAOK started the game with the aim of controlling it and imposed its pace from the start, while keeping the ball. Panserraikos, on the other hand, tried to stay solid at the back and strike on the counter-attack.

The home side were first to threaten with Rafa Soares turning the ball over, Konstantelias shooting, but Gugesashvili made a good save. The visitors responded with a direct free-kick, which was saved by Tsiftsis . Several minutes passed without major incidents until Panserraikos managed to open the scoring with a well-taken penalty by Bedancor.

The goal brought a reaction from Lucescu’s players, who immediately managed to respond with Schwab scoring from the penalty spot after Kedziora was fouled by Petavrakis.

The last minutes of the first half became somewhat of a rollercoaster. PAOK hit the crossbar via Chalov , while Panserraikos had a great chance with Tomas missing from a one-onone situation.

Chalov had another important chance afterwards, while Panseraikos then also hit the woodwork through Bedacour. Then, in the third minute of stoppage time, Ozdoev , after some pinball in the box, fired in a shot to make it 2-1 to PAOK.

The second half started in the worst possible way for the hosts, with Salazar making it 2-2 in the 49th minute.

PAOK tried to respond immediately, with Sastre missing from a good position in the 55th minute. In the next minute, Rafa Soares hit the crossbar, but then in the same phase of play the referee, after using VAR, saw that there was and illegal challenge on Chalov and pointed to the penalty spot. Schwab stepped up to slot home from 12 yards to make it 3-2.

In the 67th minute, Gugesashvili made two incredible saves, first from Murg’s shot and then on the rebound from Chalov’s header.

A flurry of changes disrupted the pace of the match in hte final 15 minutes, with PAOK in control and holding firm to get the result they wanted.
