Match Report

Winning start for double winners in premiere

25.08.2019

On a day which marked a new era for Greek football, PAOK defeated Panetolikos 2-1 at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki in the first ever match to be broadcast via a Pay-per-view service.

In another bold move which emphasizes its pioneering role as a club leading the way in the Greek market, PAOK showed a live match for the first time via its online channel. While the venture certainly had some minor hiccups, the incredible participation on the side f the supporters clearly shows that the future is here!

On the pitch, Abel Ferreira’s team beat Panetolikos without making much of an impression, although the players looked fully focused throughout the match. With one eye on next Thursday’s “mini cup final” against Slovan Bratislava which will decide qualification for the UEFA Europa League group stage, the Double-headed Eagle of the North did exactly what they needed to get the three points with the minimum of fuss.

PAOK began the game strongly but struggled to create a wealth of scoring opportunities in the early stages. It took 27 minutes for Karol Swiderski to head home after a great cross from Dimitris Giannoulis. By the end of the first half, PAOK created a few more good openings but there was no change to the scoreline.

After an uneventful opening 15 minutes of the second half, PAOK moved through the gears and began pushing for another goal. And, sure enough, PAOK made it 2-0 in the 76th minute from Josip Misic’s great goal from a difficult angle.

Panetolikos, who came to the Touba to try and play football and take the game to PAOK, managed to reduce the arrears with a brilliant goal from Dalcio.

The final result of 2-1 brought Ferreira’s first win of the season for PAOK and gave the team the necessary calmness ahead of Thursday’s crucial match.

PAOK (Abel Ferreira): Paschalakis, Giannoulis, Varela, Crespo, Mato, Esithi, Douglas, Limnios, Pelkas (78 ‘Jaba), Biseswar (61’ Misic), Swiderski (67 ‘Akpom)
