Until the end
PAOK won 2-0 against Olympiacos at Toumba Stadium with goals from Taison and A. Zivkovic, and are just one point behind AEK with two matches left until the end of the season.
With the Toumba providing the energy and passion to give the team a boost for another home match, PAOK entered the pitch in determined mood and managed to get a very important three-point haul, winning a second consecutive derby, after the previous one against AEK.
PAOK started with the intention of keeping the ball, developing play from the defensive areas, while pressing high on their opponents, and they succeeded in most of the first half.
Olympiacos had a first chance with a Masouras header in the ninth minute. PAOK responded with a shot by Konstantelias that was saved by Tzolakis, while in the 14th minute Brandon also missed from a good position.
In the 18th minute, Rodinei missed the target with a shot from distance, before Taison scored the opening goal in the 26th minute. The Brazilian saw the ball come to him after a clever pass from Andrija Živkovic and with a placed effort on the move he made it 1-0. This was also the last major chance of note of the first half, with the score not changing until the half-time break, despite the fact that both teams were in the mood and tried to threaten.
At the start of the second half, Mendilibar threw El Kaabi and Podence into the game and tried to find the equalizing goal, but the home side’s defense worked flawlessly, immediately adapting to the new developments of the game brought on by the changes.
PAOK gave some space to their opponents and tried to hit on the counter. In the 65th minute they did just that. After an Olympiacos corner, Konstantelias went on the counter-attack, skipped past Quini with an impressive dribble sent Andrija Zivkovic clean through on goal. The Serb applied the perfect finish to beat Tzolakis for 2-0.
The away side then began to play more aggressively in their frustrations, and made some tough tackles, which didn’t help to keep the tempo of the game at a high pace.
The score did not change until the final whistle of the match, despite the fact that PAOK had some further good moments in front of goal, while Olympiacos also hit the woodwork, with Kotarski parrying a shot onto the frame of the goal.
PAOK celebrated a very important victory and now turns their attention to the next derby against Panathinaikos on Wednesday (15.05), again at the Toumba Stadium at 20:00.
