PAOK make first step
Without puting on an impressive display, PAOK did enough to beat NFC Volos 1-0 at Toumba Stadium and took the first step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2023-24 Betsson Greek Cup.
Razvan Lucescu rotated his squad, while NFC Volos came to the Toumba to play football, rather than try and shut up shop. The visitors pressed high from the start with the Double-headed Eagle players unable to move the ball around well in the opening exchanges.
But as half-time approached, the hosts picked up the pace and began to threaten the opposing goalkeeper. In the 23rd minute, Murg saw the ball go wide after a nice individual piece of play and shot from outside the penalty area. In the 37th minute, Kostic saved a shot from Konstantelias , and as the clock ticked into the first minute of added time, PAOK got a crucial breakthrough.
Konstantelias found Despodov in the penalty area, Kitsos fouled him and referee Evangelou pointed to the penalty spot. Schwab converted the spot-kick from 12 yards and made it 1-0.
In the second half, PAOK continued to have the majority of the possession, but failed to create many clear scoring opportunities. Konstantelias and Murg wasted the most important ones for PAOK, while Moraitis scored, but the goal was chalked off for a foul on Vieirinha , while he also had a good header that went narrowly wide.
The scoreline remained the same up until the final whistle, and so PAOK claimed the advantage in the battle for qualification, but everything will be decided in January at the Panthessalikos Stadium.
