PAOK defeated at the death
In a game that, despite putting in a poor performance, PAOK had victory in sight until the 92nd minute. But then the hosts seem to lose their cool and cohesion in added time, conceded two goals and slipped to a painful 2-1 defeat by NFC Volos at the Toumba Stadium on Matchday 18 of the 2024-25 Stoiximan Super League.
PAOK made several changes after Thursday’s demanding cup game against AEK, which went to extra time. Kotarski, Kamara and Taison were the only players who remained in the starting lineup, with Vieirinha, Colley, Baba, Lovren, Schwab, Murg, Despodov and Brandon all getting a starting place in the lineup.
The Double-headed Eagle took control of the match from the start, had the bulk of the possession, but struggled to threaten. It is indicative that they had only three chances in the first half, with two of them coming in added time at the end of the first 45 minutes.
In the 29th minute, Colley fired in a long-distance effort, with Siabanis blocking it, while in first-half added time, Schwab found Despodov with a slick pass, but the latter failed to find the target with a prodded effort. Next, Baba hit a powerful shot goalwards, but Siabanis parried it for a corner.
The visitors had a good chance at the start of the second half, when Assehnoun, after a long run forward, stepped into the area and shot, but Kotarski was equal to it and produced a solid save.
In the 60th minute, PAOK lost Lovren to injury. The Croatian defender jumped high to meet a corner, and rolled his ankle upon landing and had to be replaced. Nine minutes later came the moment that suggested the home side could unlock the visitors’ defence and win the game. Despodov took a corner kick, Mady Kamara showed great movement to get into a threatening position to meet the ball and made it 1-0 to PAOK with a powerful header.
The home team tried to find a second goal to seal the three points, but they failed to do so. NFC Volos, on the other hand, showed that they were not about to simply give up, missing a great opportunity to level matters in the 80th minute with Kotarski stopping Skrabb in a one-on-one situation, and then in added time at the end of the match they managed to turn the game on its head.
In the second minute of added time, Sundgren crossed, the ball took a deflection off Koszta and ended up in Kotarski’s net, while two minutes later, Pedro Conde scored with a shot from outside the penalty area to make it 2-1.
PAOK tried to react, and threatened with some set pieces, but they could not find a way to equalize and were forced to taste the bitterest of defeats.
