PAOK denied three points
In a game that PAOK deserved to win based on what they did on the pitch, match officials Tzilos and Tsagarakis, with two incomprehensible decisions, denied the Double-headed Eagle two penalties and thus the team’s ability to take a bigger lead and win what was by definition a difficult match, both due to the weather conditions and the fact that PAOK was coming off the back of a grueling European match.
PAOK started the game with the intention of dominating and they succeeded from the first few minutes, despite the fact that the conditions on the pitch were difficult, with heavy rain and strong winds.
After just two minutes, Giannis Konstantelias threatened with a shot, but Barragan made a great save. However, the next time a worthy opportunity arose, Mr. Breeze left no room for the visitors’ goalkeeper to react. Despodov crossed, Barragan parried it, but Konstantelias , with an effort on the rebound, made it 1-0 in the 20th minute.
Before the half-hour mark, both teams had a great chance, with Valbuena missing from a free kick and Chalov shooting from a good position, but sending the ball just wide.
By the end of the first half, Athens Kallithea had two good moments, with Loukinas and Dibo missing the target, while PAOK scored thorugh Chalov , although the goal was disallowed for offside by Baba , with Tzilos deciding that the Ghanaian was influencing the situation.
The second half started with a good opportunity for the visitors, who saw Loukinas miss the target when he should have scored into an empty net after a mistake by the home defence.
Tzilos then pointed to the penalty spot after Pasalidis’ handball inside the box, but he then incredibly reversed the decision, despite the fact that the goalbound ball hit the visiting player’s elbow.
In the 59th minute, Athens Kallithea then found a way to level up the game. Valbuena crossed and Loukinas beat Kotarski with a header to make it 1-1.
PAOK increased their pressure, and Razvan Lucescu then made three changes from the bench, bringing on Taison, Tisoudali and Otto. His players created good some dangerous moments, but they could not find a goal, while Tzilos and Tzagarakis then denied PAOK another clear penalty, with Konstantelias being fouled in the penalty area. Despite that setback, Despodov came in the 81st minute to provide the solution. With a direct free-kick from a wide position, the Bulgarian beat Barragan to make it 2-1 for PAOK.
But, after PAOK failed to take a bigger lead, Athens Kallithea found an equalizer with a header by Isimat-Mirin from a set-piece and the game ended in a draw.
