All standing by Chrysovalantis
The packed stands at Toumba Stadium was a sight to behold. The fans’ response to Chrysovalantis’s wish through Make-A-Wish Greece and PAOK FC was amazing. Those who participated in the match also made a point of putting on a show. The stars of Greece’s 2004 squad were very involved. Angelos Basinas, Giorgos Karagounis and Thodoros Zagorakis marshaled in midfield, dictating pace and were looking for the equalizer, after Chrysovalantis scored the opener in the first minute with a fine drive.
Although most of Greece 2004 stars seemed fit enough to compete in the current Super League, their best players was… Charles Itandje who gifted them two goals out of respect for their history. Stelios Pozoglou defied his Greece U19 coach Giannis Goumas and made it 2-2.
As the match progressed the pace dropped, the average age in the PAOK squad going up due to the participation of various veterans. With rounder bellies and less hair, they strived to remember and remind everybody of their old versions. Giorgos Koutsis stood out but all of them were excellent. A spot-kick Angelos Basinas made it 3-2 for Greece 2004 after Vangelis Pourliotopoulos conceded the penalty.
After the end of the encounter, PAOK FC major shareholder Mr. Ivan Savvidis presented honorary awards to Chrysovalantis and Otto Rehhagel, while signaling the dawn of a new era for PAOK after the final payment of all outstanding debts of the club.
