Debacle
No match report can accurately reflect what is happening in this season’s play-offs. The “Double-Headed Eagle” have two opponents on the pitch: their occasional rivals and themselves. Karamanos’s goal in the 43rd minute and his provocative celebration determined the course of the encounter.
The home side carved out classic chances to score in both halves but wasted them –just as they had done in the first two play-off matches. Konstantinidis’s injury deprived PAOK of the option to attack rationally and score an equalizer that would keep hopes of a 2nd-place finish alive.
Of course, as things transpired, nobody was expecting referee Daskalopoulos to point to the spot after Papadopoulos was clearly brought down in the 48th minute.
There is much to reflect upon –not just the final standings. PAOK need to work against time in order to ensure that they will be much improved next season.
