A rotated PAOK slip to home defeat with one eye on the cup final

16.05.2021

PAOK did not manage to close out their Super League Interwetten commitments with a victory, slipping to a 1-0 home defeat to the Arcadians, who won thanks to a penalty from Gomez in the first half – a spot-kick which was taken twice.

The coaching team opted to rotate the lineup, with many new faces coming in. Pereira and Mihaj started for the first time in months, while young academy product Konstantelias was also handed his first-ever start.

The game was a nervy one from the outset, with the Double-headed Eagle starting well and unlucky not to open the scoring with Asteras goalkeeper Tsiftsis making two good saves from shots by Schwab and Tzolis.

In the 25th minute, Asteras won a penalty after Schwab committed a foul inside the penalty area. Paschalakis initially saved Gomez‘ effort, but following a VAR review match referee Georgios Tzovaras called for a retake, as the home goalkeeper did not have either of his two feet on the goal line.

The PAOK goalkeeper guessed correctly again the second time, but the ball went through his hands and ended up in the net. This incident ended up deciding the result of match, as neither team managed to beat their opposing defences.

PAOK did have a couple of good moments through Tzolis and Warda in the second half, but the scoreline remained unchanged.

The Double-headed Eagle now turn their attention to the last game of the season, the final of the Greek Cup against Olympiacos at the OAKA on Saturday (22.05, 21:00) night.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Paschalakis, Michailidis, Varela (63′ Rodrigo), Mihaj (46′ Crespo), Pereira, Lyratzis, Tsingaras, Schwab (64′ Ninua), Konstantelias (46′ Warda), Tzolis, Swinderski (63′ Krmencik).

Asteras Tripolis: Tsiftsis, Garcia, Tasoulis, Castano, Suarez, Belok (93′ Christopoulos), Valiente, Gomez (46′ Kanellopoulos), Sito (62′ Alvarez), Ali Baba (46′ Kotsiras), Tzimaris (93′ Kardaris)
