Maurício had the answers
PAOK were a joy to watch in the first half, dominating the encounter from end to end. They had 71% possession, attempted 10 shots, six of them on target, and scored twice. Two astonising goals, both of them with long-range shotw by Maurício in a span of three minutes (34’, 37’).
One could tell from kick off that the “Double-Headed Eagle” were in high spirits and extremely focused. Omar El Kaddouri was the first to try for an opener, then it was the turn of Adelino Vieirinha and Dimitris Pelkas , as PAOK had camped in Athanasiadis’s box. It was not a matter of “if” they would score, but rather “when” that would happen.
Maurício’s magical right foot broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, with a beautiful volleyed shot. Three minutes later, he repeated the same move, even more impressively, to make it 2-0 and complete his brace!
After the interval, the match complexion changed, but PAOK remained in command. Asteras looked more eager to gain metres on the pitch, but they only really threatened their hosts once. In the 57th minute, Kyriakopoulos’s direct free kick was denied by the woodwork.
Răzvan Lucescu’s troops held on to the ball, looked for balanced attacks and came close to a third goal through Dimitris Pelkas, Maurício, Adelino Vieirinha and Léo Matos.
The visitors made a last attempt to reduce distances in the 86th minute with Kaltsas. That proved the last noteworthy opportunity of the encounter. PAOK were deserved winners and Maurício the undisputed MVP of the encounter.
