PAOK started the Play Offs of the 2023-24 Stoiximan Super League in the worst possible way as they were defeated 1-0 by Aris at Toumba Stadium on Sunday (10.03).

In a game that was strongly reminiscent of last Thursday night in Zagreb, PAOK could not find a way to effectively threaten their opponent, while also paying for their mistakes, as they conceded a goal from… nowhere and lost everything on Matchday 1 of the post-season.

Throughout the match, PAOK had control and possession of the ball. They moved the ball around properly and looked composed, until they got into the final third. There, Razvan Lucescu’s players seemed to suffer creative block and were shut out. Aris, like most of the teams facing PAOK this season, played with 11 players behind the half-way line, closed all the corridors and taking zero risks tried to hit on the counter.

In the first half, chances were at a premium. PAOK had some decent shots on goal with Murg, Jonny and A. Zivkovic all failing to find the target, while Aris, in the only goal effort they attempted, took the lead through Moron’s shot on the turn in the 31st minute.

In the second half, PAOK increased the pressure, took more risks, and Lucescu threw on every available attacking player he had on the bench into battle, but again the situation was the same. The Double-headed Eagle were aying siege to the opposing penalty area, but they just couldn’t seem to get a cutting edge.

Murg, Baba, Taison, A. Zivkovic, Konstantelias and Tzimas all wasted decent opportunities that the home side could create, with the result being the visitors going hom with the points.

Team lineups:

PAOK: Kotarski, Baba, Koulierakis, Kedziora, Jonny (Despodov 71′), Meite (Ozdoev 78′), Marcos Antonio (Schwab 59′), Taison, A.Zivkovic, Murg (Konstantelias 59′), Brandon (Tzimas 71′ ).

Aris: Cuesta, Odubajo, Fabiano, Brambetz, Montoya, Zul (Veleth 76′), Verstrate, Darida, Saverio (Zamora 76′), Suleimanov (Fetfatzidis 90′), Moron (Ansarifard 46′).
