The most improbable scorer
PAOK returned to league action with a 2-0 victory over AEL Larissa, thanks to Cañas’s first career goal and to a rare strike by Kitsiou.
In a rather uneventful afternoon in Toumba, the “Double-Headed Eagle” recorded their second consecutive win in the league.
They dominated proceedings right from the start and recorded their first noteworthy opportunity in the 17th minute, when Léo Matos found himself unmarked in the rival box in a corner taken by Diego Biseswar, but he drilled his shot past the post.
Pedro Henriquecame even closer in the 26th minute. He slalomed his way past two opponents, but his shot flew narrowly wide.
Ten minutes later, José Alberto Cañas broke the deadlock with a long-range net-buster. It was his first PAOK goal that also opened his career account. Just before the interval, Matos’s clever strike was denied by Xenodochof’s left-hand post.
In the second half, the “Double-Headed Eagle” kept territorial superiority, but they only made their dominance count in the last minutes of the encounter. In the 87th minute, Stelios Kitsiou’s combined with Ergys Kaçe and slipped home his side’s second goal.
In stoppage time, Efthymis Koulouris squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to make it 3-0, Xenodochov denying his shot.
The international break proved beneficial for Vladan Ivić’s troops, who kicked off the last stretch of the league in ideal fashion.
