A "cold" defeat at OAKA

05.01.2025

In a game that was initially played as 11 vs 11, PAOK had the control and possession. But Panathinaikos capitalised on their 37-minute numerical advantage and claimed a narrow 2-1 victory in the finale with a late goal at an empty OAKA.

PAOK turned up ready in Athens, looked determined and needed a little less than two minutes to take the lead. Brandon fought hard and won a one-on-one duel with a defender, passed to Ozdoev, and he found Andrija Zivkovic who sored with a great header to put the visitors ahead.

The Double-headed Eagle seemed to then take control the game, while Panathinaikos were penned in their own half and attempted to strike on the counter-attack. And, with one such effort, Ioannidis managed to get in behind the PAOK defense and beat Kotarski to make it 1-1.

After the equalizer, the pattern of the match did not change, however. Panathinaikos remained subdued and playing mostly in their own half and waited for PAOK, who continued to have the lion’s share of possession as they tried to probe for another goal.

Panathinaikos did have two good moments, though, first in the 20th minute with Jedvaj being denied by Kotarski’s excellent save, and in the 35th minute Ioannidis failed to find the target from a one-on-one position.

The second half started with a great opportunity for each team. In the 47th minute Kotarski made another fine save, stopping Maksimovic’s header, while in the 58th minute PAOK launched a great counter-attack. Taison had the opposing defense on the back foot, befoire passing to A. Zivkovic, but Dragovski saved the Serb’s placed effort, while on the rebound Zile passed to Taison, but he sent the ball wide.

In the 60th minute came the phase that largely decided the match. Baba received a second yellow card, the first in the first half for protesting, and left his team with 10 men.

The pattern of play changed from then on. PAOK remained solid and tried to keep Panathinaikos away from their goal, having to deal with a hostile referee who gave them a foul, only to… cut off their counter-attack.

PAOK held on, with Kotarski making another excellent save from Tete’s shot from a wide position, but Panathinaikos found the winning goal in agonising fashion in the 90th minute with a shot by Unai.

Team lineups:

Panathinaikos: Dragovski, Vagiannidis, Jedvai, Ingason, Mladenovic, Maksimovic, Arao (73’ Unai), Bakasetas (90+3’ Mancini), Tete (90+3’ Cerin), Ioannidis, Djuricic (73’ Pelistri).

PAOK: Kotarski, Otto, Lovren, Kedziora, Baba, Ozdoev (73’ Schwab), Kamara, Murg (63’ Sastre), A. Zivkovic (90+3’ Shoretire), Brandon (63’ Samatta), Taison (73’ Despodov).
